“Oh, my God!” Jane railed as she marched to the car well ahead of her sister, who’d had one beer too many before Jane could drag her out of the house. “What were you thinking, saying what you did to Kurt and Ranson about my date last night?”

“What do you mean?” Kate asked, playing stupid.

“I know you’re tipsy, but certainly you remember spouting off that I slept with my date last night.”

“Oh, that.” Kate played it off as though it was nothing as she continued to stumble along. “Don’t be mad. I mean, I could see you getting angry if Ranson and Kurt were your friends. But they’re five and six years younger than you—my friends. What do they care if you slept with some guy on a date?”

Jane had to be careful not to go too far. She didn’t want to plant any suspicion in her sister’s mind. “When I tell you stuff like that, it’s private. If I want other people to know, I’ll tell them myself.”

“You’re overreacting,” she insisted.

“It was none of their business. I’m sorry I ever told you.”

“Oh, stop.”

Jane jerked away when Kate tried to catch her arm.

“Wow. You’re really mad.”

“Of course I’m mad. You embarrassed me.”

Kate slid into the passenger seat as Jane got behind the wheel. “All right, all right. I’m sorry. I thought it was funny, and I’m sure they did, too, but I’ll respect your privacy from now on.”

Grateful for the cover darkness provided, Jane started the car. If Kate ever found out that it was Kurt she’d seen in Bozeman, her sister would never forgive her. But she wasn’t going to find out. Unless...

Jane’s hand automatically went to her stomach as she drove around the horseshoe-shaped driveway to get back on the main road. Chances were, she wasn’t pregnant. Even if she was, they might still keep it a total secret.

“You can be so uptight,” her sister grumbled.

Jane figured she needed to cut Kate a break. Her sister had just gone through a harrowing week. And she was right about Kurt being her school friend and, sometimes, quasi-boyfriend. The guilt Jane felt for getting involved with him in spite of that took the fire out of her umbrage. “Maybe I just haven’t had as much to drink,” she muttered. She actually hadn’t had any, just in case she was pregnant, and Kate immediately called her on it.

“I don’t remember you having one, but maybe you should have,” her sister countered. “Then you might’ve had some fun like the rest of us.”

Kurt hadn’t drunk much, either, but Jane didn’t point that out. She didn’t want to reveal how closely she’d been watching him. She’d been able to feel the heat of his body when he moved past her, even though they never touched, had felt the weight of his gaze on more than one occasion and looked up to see him watching her.

“At least I won at beer pong,” Jane pointed out. Fortunately, they’d put water in the cups, or maybe she’d be as drunk as Kate.
